Event details

Event Description

In this event, we're going to take a long walk along some hills with sweeping views over the Tagus estuary and the Lezírias. We'll pass the Quinta Municipal de Subserra, some of the forts of the 1st defensive line of Torres Vedras and old windmills, with climbs and trails well suited to nature lovers. Our route also takes us through the village of Calhandriz, a very friendly place with rural and natural features. Another event not to be missed, well suited to keen walkers!

Alhandra

This walk starts in the riverside area of Alhandra, next to the Sociedade Euterpe Alhandrense. We'll walk along a good part of the riverside area, arm in arm with the magnificent River Tagus. We'll then take a turn towards excellent panoramic views of the Tagus, the Mouchões and the fertile fields of the Lezíria. The second part of the tour will also take in some paths and trails in a more rural part of the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, in the parishes of Alhandra, S. João dos Montes and Calhandriz. Highlights of the route include the Mother Church of S. João dos Montes and a visit to the Subserra Municipal Farm. The last section of the walk will pass by the Lines of Torres Vedras viewpoint (the former Boavista stronghold, the starting point of Torres Vedras' 1st Defence Line).

Signal Fort

This fort had an irregular polygon plan. Built at an altitude of 316 metres, it was the most important stronghold in terms of defending the position of Alhandra and was designed for a garrison of 400 soldiers, located in the Serra de S. Lourenço.

St Mark's Parish Church - Calhandriz

The original date of the church's construction is unknown, but there are traces of a Roman building (a carved tombstone from the Roman period) that may have existed on the site where the church stands today. In 1755, after the great earthquake that devastated the city of Lisbon and the surrounding areas (such as the Calhandriz Valley), work began on rebuilding St Mark's Church. Between 2001 and 2002, the church underwent restoration work, organised by the local parish.
