Event Description
In this event we'll get to know the Foz Palace (Palace and Abbey) from the inside, on a complete tour of this magnificent building, which stands out for its grandeur, in the heart of Restauradores Square. We'll also take advantage of the morning to visit the recently opened Banco de Portugal Money Museum, where we'll be able to hold a real gold bar in our hands.
Foz Palace:
The Foz Palace, or more correctly Castelo Melhor Palace, was conceived as a project in the 18th century and its construction dragged on until the middle of the last century. Although the façade and general structure can be considered characteristic of eighteenth-century architecture, which had already been freed from Baroque influence and subordinated to the Italian "new taste", the interior, which was remodelled later, has "revivalist" decoration, which was very much in vogue in the second half of the 19th century.
Mysterious Wine Abbey
Guided tour of the secular space of the former Abadia Vínica Restaurant, full of history and symbolism. An underground site that includes a visit to the Claustrum, the Refectory and mysterious Cells.
Money Museum
The Money Museum presents the theme of money, its history and its relationship with societies and individuals through the Bank's collections of numismatics and notafilia and other objects and virtual contextualisation devices.
The museography, designed by the Providência Design studio and developed with the Banco de Portugal team, is based on thematic centres that focus on standard items, money in the world and its history over the centuries, the manufacture of banknotes and coins, and personal testimonies about the role of money in people's lives.
