Event Description
At this event we will walk in an area with many points of interest and get to know the entire coastline, from Milreu Fort to Foz do Lizandro Beach. We'll also take advantage of the morning to learn more about the various monuments and places of interest within the fishing village of Ericeira. Another event not to be missed!
Milreu Fort
A modern fortification with Mannerist features, built at the end of the third quarter of the 17th century to guard the coastline, which was the target of constant attacks by privateers and pirates, namely to defend the fishing port of Ericeira and its town, following the principles of the French School. It has a rectangular plan, made up of an esplanade battery, curtain walls on a slope topped by a parapet with five gunboats, two cylindrical guardhouses with conical roofs, mainly located at the end, and bastions facing the land, defending the northern entrance to the fort against attacks by landed forces.
Chapel of St Sebastian
The Chapel of São Sebastião dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and is located in the northern part of the town of Ericeira, next to the beaches of Algodio and São Sebastião. For several years now, the Festivities in Honour of S. Sebastião and S. Vicente have been held near the chapel at the end of January, once the biggest celebration in the town and surrounding area. Nowadays, the festivities are also known as Festa dos Bêbados. After Mass, the people of Ericeira (and other visitors) gather in the church square to dance to popular music, eat regional cakes and drink a glass of red wine from barrels donated for the event.
North Algodio Beach
With direct access to the centre of Ericeira, it is bordered to the south by the fishing port jetty and to the north by a natural rocky spur that separates it from Praia de São Sebastião. Overlooking Praia do Algodio is the beautiful, typical house in the northern part of the town of Ericeira.
Foz do Lizandro Beach
Located in the parish of Carvoeira, Foz do Lizandro beach has the longest stretch of sand in the municipality of Mafra and a natural landscape that is inseparable from the River Lizandro, which flows into it and gives it its name.
