A busy Saturday afternoon, with lots of culture and ending with the famous Carcavelos wine.
Marquês de Pombal or Count of Oeiras Palace:
O Palace of the Marquis of Pombal or Palace of the Count of Oeiras is a typical 18th-century manor house located in the parish of Oeiras and São Julião da Barra.
Built under the supervision of Hungarian architect Carlos Mardel in the second half of the 18th century, the palace served as the official residence of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, also known as the Count of Oeiras and Marquis of Pombal, from whom the building derives its name.
The palace and gardens are characterised by their rare and beautiful architectural and artistic elements (stuccoes, tiles, statues, etc.). The palace is currently located in the centre of the town, and if you look at it you can get an idea of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo's immense wealth, as it is a building of very palatial dimensions, ornamented like a royal palace. Today it is one of the finest examples of an 18th century Portuguese manor house in the Baroque and Rococo styles.
The palace is located on what was once a huge manor farm. In addition to the palace, the magnificent gardens remain, of fantastical inspirations that could only come from a genius like Carvalho e Melo.

In addition to the visit to the palace, those interested will also enjoy a short walk around the Oeiras Municipal Garden, approximately 3 kilometres long.
