The 7 Hills of Lisbon

St George's Hillalso known as the Castle, is the highest hill in the Iberian Peninsula. seven (in reality, it's the hill of Graça, which is the highest hill in Lisbon, but as we've seen, it was forgotten by the author of this legend) and it's where the current Castelo de São Jorge is located and where the first settlement that gave rise to Lisbon is thought to have appeared, on this hill and below the Castelo there were traces of the Roman opidium (which is why it was the centre of the old municipality), it's known that the Arab alcázar was located there and that's where the castle from the time of the Reconquista was built, which still exists today. Its geographical area currently covers the neighbourhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and part of Alfama (southeast).

Hill of St AnneThe monastery of the Dominican nuns of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada stood on the site where Largo da Anunciada now stands. It gave its name to the place and the street next to it in 1539, after the Augustinian friars gave it in exchange to the nuns, who moved to this spot from their original foundation on the Castle Coast, right on top of the same hill. This hill is located to the west of St George's Castle and has become a spur between the Ribeira de Valverde to the west and the Ribeira de Arroios to the east, which at their confluence delimited it to the south, roughly equivalent to the area currently defined by Rua de São José/Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, Rua da Palma/Largo do Martim Moniz and Praça da Figueira.

St Andrew's HillThe story goes that D. Afonso Henriques took advantage of the strategic qualities of the region and set up his troops here in 1147 to attack the city. With the earthquake of 1551, which sent many residents out of the old city, they chose the hills of Graça and Santo André because they were very high (in reality, the facts also refer to the hill of Graça, which is adjacent to this one), Thus, noble families settled in the area and bought farms where they built country houses. Later, these houses gave way to large palaces, mainly along the Graça and Santo André pavements and in Largo da Graça.

Chagas Hill named after the church built there by sailors on the route to India in honour of the Wounds of Christ, currently corresponds to the area around Largo do Carmo.

St Catherine's Hill which currently runs from Camões to Calçada do Combro.

Hill of São Roquealso confused by some as hill of St Peter of Alcântara which never existed because it was named after a street and a garden with a very recent name. It is also home to the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, which is perhaps the source of the confusion.
