Event Description

This event includes a guided tour of the Lisbon Mosque and a traditional dinner in the Mosque's restaurant. The buffet dinner consists of two courses, one with chicken and the other with vegetables. A different experience, but with the most authentic flavour and tradition of this cuisine, served with great friendliness and welcome. Another event not to be missed!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Ladies should wear trousers and sleeves and bring a scarf to cover their heads.

The Lisbon Mosque:

From 1974 onwards, and as a result of the Portuguese decolonisation movement and the civil war that followed in the former Portuguese colonies, the number of Muslims increased in Portugal, most of them from Portuguese-speaking African countries. In 1979, the Mota Pinto government gave the Islamic community part of the Príncipe Real Palace to hold their prayers there. However, it was necessary to organise the construction of a space for the Islamic community, a task largely led by Suleiman Valy Mamede, then president of the Islamic Community of Lisbon (CIL).

Although the petition for the land had been ready since 1966, construction of the mosque only began in 1979, with a project by architects António Braga and João Paulo Conceição. The mosque was inaugurated on 29 March 1985. It is a temple of modern architecture.

Its construction was the result of contributions from Islamic countries, led by Saudi Arabia (with 1 million dollars), followed by Kuwait, Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Lisbon Central Mosque is the main mosque of the Portuguese Islamic community. Like most mosques, there are four distinct areas: the entrance, the prayer hall (over which a dome rises), the madrasah (Islamic school) and the minaret. The current imam of the Lisbon mosque is sheik David Munir.
