EVENT DESCRIPTION: “Walking in Morocco - Imperial Cities and the Blue City“

In this activity proposal, we'll go for a walk and enjoy a unique experience in various cities in Morocco. Our itinerary includes Casablanca, Fez, Rabat, the blue city of Chefchouan, Meknes, Marrakech, El Jadida and Essaouira. It's sure to be a trip that will stand out for the excellence of its itinerary. Come with us!

These will be some of the most important places on our itinerary: 

• Tour of Casablanca with an official guide (Anfa area, Corniche Ain Diab and Hassan Mosque)
• Guided tour of the blue city of Chefchaouen with an official guide
• Guided tour of the old town of Fes (UNESCO Heritage Site)
• City tour of Rabat (with a visit to the Casbah of the Udaias, Hassan Tower and Mohamed V Mausoleum)
• Walk and guided tour of the coastal town of Essaouira (with a medina classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, a vibrant fishing harbour with the typical blue boats of Essaoouira, a fortress of Portuguese origin that defies the ocean and served as the setting for Game of Thrones).
• Guided tour of the old town of Marrakech (UNESCO Heritage Site) with official guide)
• Natural landscapes

TIME: Departure from Lisbon at 9am
RETURN: Arrival in Lisbon at 8.30pm

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen has turquoise blue colours and all the houses in its old medina are painted a very fresh and beautiful colour. It has a population of around 40,000, mostly belonging to Berber tribes, now that the days of the teeming mellah are long gone. Its popular name says a lot about the city: most of the buildings in its medina are painted blue, as are its doors and windows. Seen from afar, Chefchaouen's historic centre is dominated by this colour, which blends in with the usually clear skies. It seems that it was the Sephardic Jews who brought with them the habit of painting their houses blue. For them, this colour represents heaven and paradise, serving as an omnipresent sign of the need to follow a spiritual path in life. This trend can be seen in other places, such as Safed in Israel, but it is in Chefchaouen that it has achieved the greatest notoriety. According to the testimony of the elders, for a long time this use of blue was limited to the part of the city occupied by the Jewish community, the mellah, and there is a memory of a completely white medina. Why blue was applied to the whole of Chefchaouen's old town is a mystery, and some even say it was tradition. However, there are those who dispute this origin of Chefchaouen's blue colour, attributing it to more practical reasons, such as keeping mosquitoes away from houses or offering a feeling of coolness in the hot summer months. There are also those who allude to the representation of water and say that the shades of blue found in the city correspond to all the variations that the waters of the Mediterranean present, or that blue was adopted in Chefchaouen as a tribute to Ras el-Maa, the waterfall where the inhabitants collect their drinking water. Today Chefchaouen - or Chaouen, as it is often called by Moroccans - is a charming city that attracts tourists from all over the world.

EL Jadida

Once called Mazagan, this city built by the Portuguese has proudly faced the ocean since the 16th century. The excellent preservation of its architectural treasures and the fabulous blend of influences between Moroccan and European cultures have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Far from the traditional tourist routes, El Jadida has an undeniable charm. The fortification of the Portuguese citadel, with its bastions and ramparts, is one of the first examples of Renaissance military design.

Rabat

When the French arrived in Rabat in 1912, the Medina he walled medina was all that existed in the city. Unlike the labyrinthine medinas of Fez and Marrakech, Rabat's was created in the 17th century with a geometric shape, making life easier for visitors. The main shopping street, rue Souika, stands out here and is divided into two parts, one more local, with products aimed at the inhabitants of Rabat, and the other with handicrafts and tourist souvenirs.

One of Rabat's most fascinating and iconic structures, the Hassan Tower dates back to the middle of the 12th century and stands to the east of the Hassan neighbourhood, close to the mausoleum of Mohamed V. It was built by Yacoub al-Mansour, an Almohad monarch, and was to be the minaret of the great mosque he planned to build but which never materialised: with Yacoub al-Mansour's death in 1150, construction work stopped and the project was never completed.

O Mausoleum of Mohamed V is located next to the famous Hassan Tower, housing the remains of the first monarch of independent Morocco. The mausoleum was built on the spot where, after his return from exile in Madagascar in 1956, the king gathered a crowd around him and in his company gave thanks to God for the country's independence. Only Muslims can enter the attached mosque, but everyone can see the tomb room from a chamber located on an upper level, as long as respectful clothing is worn.

Marrakech

Between tradition and modernity, Marrakech promises incomparable sensations. Strolling through Jemaa El-Fna square and the souks with their shimmering colours and oriental scents, the red city answers your desire for a change of scenery at the snap of a finger. Horse-drawn carriage rides, sunny terraces, travelling artists and other daytime and evening activities will punctuate your stay in Morocco. You can admire all the architectural richness of the Medina by visiting one of its many riads, small oriental palaces organised around a central courtyard, or you can recharge your batteries in the Menara, a vast garden with a basin that is emblematic of the city. Marrakech leaves the choice up to its visitors, taking advantage of its incredible diversity.
