11h15 -Tour of the Historical Village of Castelo Rodrigo
12h00 - Conquering the Serra da Marofa“ walk”
Castelo Rodrigo is located at an altitude of 820 metres. The hilltop village retains its medieval layout of a circular square surrounded by a belt of walls. History tells us that in 1209 the King of León, D. Afonso IX, granted a charter to what would be described as the “perfect municipality” of Castelo Rodrigo, ordering the construction of the walls, which were then destroyed, to defend against the Portuguese who, at the time, were located below the Côa.
The Marofa mountain range is the highest point in the Riba-Côa region. The summit reaches an altitude of 975 metres and is visible from several neighbouring municipalities. Marofa is not very extensive. It stretches for around 10 kilometres in the shape of a cone. A huge 6 metre high granite Christ the King. It stands on the edge of a ravine with open arms facing the immense plateau that encompasses Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, the reservoir of the Santa Maria de Aguiar dam and Spain.
