LISBON: THE MOURARIA NEIGHBOURHOOD

Our route starts next to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, in the heart of Martim Moniz square, and it is under the majestic gaze of the castle that we enter the Mouraria neighbourhood, with houses jostling each other all the way down to the valley, in a maze of alleys, lanes, squares and staircases that remind us of a Muslim medina. The streets are still made of stone and the old gates of the medieval city. The diversity of place names evokes patron saints, vanished trades, aristocratic families and old roads.

Under the majestic gaze of the castle, the houses elbow their way down to the valley, in a maze of alleys, lanes, squares and staircases that remind us of a Muslim medina. The streets are still made up of old stones and the old gates of the medieval city. The diversity of place names evokes patron saints, vanished trades, aristocratic families and old roads. The first Jesuit residence in the world (the Colégio de Santo Antão-O-Velho), the Recolhimento de São Cristóvão, the balcony house in Largo da Achada and other centuries-old buildings still stand in Mouraria. In Rua do Capelão, history passes through the house where Maria Severa Onofriana lived, one of the founding myths of Fado, rich in love and disaffection. It's also in Martim Moniz, Mouraria's main square, that people from the most varied cultures and backgrounds live and do business in Lisbon.
