Event details

Event Description

In this event, which is part of the “Great Walks” circle, we're going to walk through one of the most beautiful valleys in the Mafra region, the Architect's Valley, with its different textures, landscapes and enchanting trails..... passing by the Zambujal Fort, and then we'll go to the magnificent mouth of the River Lizandro, with the opportunity to walk along the coastline to São Julião Beach. This is undoubtedly another walk tailor-made for keen walkers - another event not to be missed!

Architect's Valley:

This is a hidden valley at the gates of Mafra. To get there, you have to follow the water line of the stream that leads to an isolated and surprising hermitage that was probably built in the 17th century.

The winding access is rewarded by the natural beauty and silence of this magical place. The true origin of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Architect is unknown, but according to legend, it is due to the promise of a fisherman who, on being freed from the sea on a stormy day, promised it to Our Lady of Help. Inside, the images of saints from the Mafra School of Sculpture stand out.

Zambujal Fort:

The Zambujal Fort is located in the parish of Carvoeira, in the municipality of Mafra, and is part of the second of the so-called Lines of Torres Vedras. It is located at the western end of the second line, in the Serra Gorda, overlooking the River Lizandro and its tributary, the Vidigueira stream. Taking advantage of the elevation of the terrain, it dominated the surrounding region and the road from Ericeira to Belas, passing through Carvoeira.

Chapel of St Julian

At the top of the coast, overlooking the ocean, stands the Chapel of St Julian, presumably from the 16th century despite the date 1768 inscribed on the main door, which must be when it was rebuilt after the earthquake. The interior is lined with eighteenth-century tiles depicting the life of St Julian. The sundial dates from 1754 and the cross from 1764.
