In this event we're going to walk through the village of Roupa Branca - aka Charneca do Milharado, the village immortalised in the film “Aldeia da Roupa Branca” by the “famous” actress Beatriz Costa (Beatriz da Conceição by name), where she was born on 14 December 1907, in Casal Barreiro. We'll get to know the village as well as the surrounding area, where there are still strong rural traits of a country nature. Another event not to be missed!

The film “White Clothes Village”

This was the film that propelled Beatriz Costa to stardom. The life, daily life, picturesque customs, quarrels, rivalries and passions of the small hillbilly community on the outskirts of Lisbon, which was in charge of washing clothes in the river. Two families, that of Uncle Jacinto and his unlucky goddaughter Gracinda, and that of the widow Quitéria and her son Luís, have a lively and fierce competition with each other in the white linen business, which takes them to some extremes. However, everything will be resolved in the best possible way with the appearance of a lorry bought in Lisbon, which will usher in a new era in the “alfachinhas” laundry business”

“A Aldeia da Roupa Branca” (The Village of White Clothes) by Chianca de Garcia is a remarkable example of Portuguese cinema in its golden age, which stretched from the 1930s to the 1950s, especially in terms of the comedy of manners, which includes this amusing and biting story of two hillbilly families who are involved in a constant rivalry, always on the brink of conflict, in order to get the best laundry orders. Garcia relied on a remarkable array of talents in the making of this project, such as the participation of José Gomes Ferreira and Ramada Curto in the script, Aquilino Mendes in the photography and Miguel Vieira de Sousa in the editing, the latter clearly responsible for that anthology sequence that is the thrilling and spectacular cart race.
