This proposal from Caminhando consists of a walk to (re)discover gardens and their stories, starting at Cais do Sodré and arriving at Praça da Alegria. These are the homes of exotic old trees that transport us to other cultural and historical latitudes and keep the memory of national personalities alive. Another event not to be missed!

Cais do Sodré - Roque Gameiro Garden

In this riverside garden, we'll meet centenary tipuanas from Brazil and Bolivia, dressed in golden yellow flowers and whose exotic wood is known as rosewood.

Barão Quintela Square

Just up Rua do Alecrim, in Largo Barão Quintela, you'll find a group of palm trees of the female species, recognisable by their abundant "orange hair". The palm is one of the trees classified as fossils, because they date back 100 million years. In the Middle East, its fruit - the date palm - remains of significant economic importance.

Rua do Século

Two Lodões-bastardos live in front of the former family residence of the Marquis of Pombal. It is the most common tree species in the city's streets. It was also the favourite tree of the poet Eugénio de Andrade. There are also legends that its berries numbed Ulysses' sailors on their arrival in Lisbon.

Príncipe Real Garden

After walking through Bairro Alto, we'll meet the oldest tree in Lisbon - a 140-year-old Cedro do Buçaco. Other neighbouring species have many stories to tell us. A Plátano orientalis given to us in 1956 by King Paul of Greece reminds us of the tree where the physician Hippocrates gave his consultations. An Araucaria from New Caledonia, discovered in the 18th century by James Cook, also tells us about the botanical finds made during his maritime expeditions.

Praça da Alegria - Jardim Alfredo Keil

To round off our tour, we'll visit another set of centuries-old exotic trees. Two Metrosideros, native to New Zealand and considered sacred trees by the Maori people, impress with the engineering of their aerial roots. Finally, a group of Erythrines and Paineras, native to South America, with their leafy blooms, reveal two more very unique and exotic species.
