This proposed walk takes place in Coruche, the cork capital of the world, and we'll walk through some of its most pleasant natural spaces, such as the banks of the River Sorraia, the river beach and the fertile fields of Lezíria. We'll also take the opportunity to discover some of the most beautiful spots, such as the town square, the pillory and the Church of Nossa Senhora do Castelo. Another event not to be missed!

The Sorraia River

The Sorraia River is considered to be the backbone of the municipality and is one of the main tributaries on the left bank of the Tagus. The floods of the Sorraia and its tributaries have contributed to the fertility of the lezíria by depositing sediments rich in organic matter, where rice and maize are grown.

Coruche and the montado forest

The cork oak forest is a remarkable case of renewal, sustainable exploitation and what makes Coruche special, earning it the title of World Cork Capital. Coruche thus combines the privilege of the beautiful and the good. Around 50% of the municipality is forest, in a mixed cork oak and stone pine forest, sectors of excellence, both for the quality and economic value of the products generated - wood, cork and pine nuts - and for the richness of the fauna and flora, as well as for their high environmental contribution and combined ecological value.

Cork Oak and Cork Oak Observatory

The Cork Oak and Cork Observatory is a singular building, unique in Portugal, covered in cork on the outside and inside the auditorium. It was designed by architect Manuel Couceiro as a tribute to the cork oak, Portugal's national tree.

Cork

Coruche is the World Capital of Cork. 8% of the country's cork is extracted in the municipality. The Coruche factory produces 5 million cork stoppers a day.

Bell

The oldest bell in Portugal, dating from the 13th century, was found in Coruche and can be visited at the Coruche Municipal Museum.

Pelourinho

The quintessential symbol of municipal authority and power, the original 16th century pillory stood in the square in front of the Town Hall. Dismantled around the 1930s, the column was reused in a period building, while the capital is still preserved today in a private house. It was precisely from these two fragments that Coruche's current pillory was reconstructed. The replica was placed in 1941 in the square next to the Town Hall
