Event Description
This walk takes place along the Mata de Belas, allowing you to get to know this important patch of green so close to Lisbon, where in addition to the lush vegetation you can enjoy the Aqueduct and Quinta da Fonteireira. For other attractions, we'll climb up to the Penedos Pardos geodesic landmark, cross the Jamor stream and return to Belas. Another event not to be missed!
Beautiful
Belas was a town and county seat until 1855. Until liberalism, it consisted only of the parish of Belas, and later the parish of Barcarena was added. In 1849 it had 4,041 inhabitants and 49 km². It was granted town status again on 24 July 1997. In 2013, as part of the administrative reform, it was annexed to the parish of Queluz, creating the União de Freguesias de Queluz e Belas.
Quinta da Fonteireira
The farm is located in the parish of Queluz-Belas and is set in an extensive area of forest, overlooking the typical landscape of the Serra da Carregueira with its characteristic fauna and flora. The proposed walk takes in the paths and trails of this beautiful, huge farm and its highlight is the ascent to the watchtower and geodesic vertex of Belas.
In 1525, Quinta da Fonteireira was owned by Álvaro Pires Serrador. This is the oldest known reference to this farm. Until it was acquired by Gregório Raimundo Vieira in 1710, there were several owners. It is very likely that the latter was responsible for building the first residential structure and chapel in the area overlooking the Ribeira do Castanheira.
Águas Livres Aqueduct - Fonteireira Aqueduct
On this route we will have the opportunity to take a closer look at one of the subsidiary aqueducts of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, where we can see the connection and importance of these structures in the whole complex that constitutes this unique work of Portuguese engineering for the transport, storage and distribution of water to the city of Lisbon, which began in the 18th century.
