Event details

Event Description

This proposed walk starts in Praça Dom Fernando II, in São Pedro de Penaferrim (Sintra), the site of the famous market that is always held on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The route will continue to the Santa Eufémia viewpoint, round the Pena Palace and on to the Loba Cave. We'll also pass by the Blue Lagoon and some farms in the Linhó area, before returning to the starting point. This is another event not to be missed!

The She-wolf's Cave

The Loba Cave consists of a small rocky concavity that suggests the shape of a she-wolf. It serves as a shelter for the Boy Scouts and in the past it also served as a shelter for shepherds.

Santa Eufémia Viewpoint

The Miradouro de Santa Eufémia is located in Santa Eufémia da Serra, at around 470 metres, offering a beautiful view over the municipality of Sintra from Queluz to the ocean. This is the most remotely inhabited place in the Sintra mountains, probably since around 4000 BC.

According to the chronicles of the Crusades dating back to 1147, the water from the Santa Eufémia spring had healing powers, which is why the chapel of Santa Eufémia was built in the 13th century and became a place of pilgrimage and devotion.

In Santa Eufémia da Serra there was also a temple dedicated to the Moon, with a tribune and a bandstand in the churchyard that served as worship spaces.

The Blue Lagoon

The existence of the Blue Lagoon is due to the alteration of the granites of the Sintra massif which, through the action of various erosive agents, give rise to sands and clays that will coat and waterproof the bottom of the lagoon, preventing the water that accumulates there from draining away, the role of the clays being fundamental here thanks to the small size of their particles.
The erosion caused by the vegetation, which grows between the cracks in the granite, can be easily visualised, as can the roots that run through and break up the rock.
