Event Description
This walk starts in the car park of the Várzea Green Park in Torres Vedras and from there we begin our route, which takes us around the outskirts of the city, along rural paths and trails with great panoramic views of the surrounding area. The route, often through extensive vineyards, takes in Castro do Zambujal, Serra da Vila, Sanatório do Barro, Nossa Senhora da Pena and Tholos do Barro. Another event not to be missed!
Castro do Zambujal:
Discovered in the 1930s by archaeologist Leonel Trindade, Castro de Zambujal, in the municipality of Torres Vedras, is one of the main fortified settlements on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest from the Chalcolithic period in Western Europe, which was probably inhabited between the first and third millennia BC.
The settlement is located on a plateau above the Ribeira de Pedrulhos, a tributary of the River Sizandro, in an area that was navigable and facilitated trade, which seems to be linked to the industries of flint processing, copper smelting, weaving and ceramics production.
The available information also suggests that these peoples raised sheep and goats, which were not very important in their diet, but were more important for producing milk and wool. But fishing and shellfish gathering already seem to have an important place in the diet of these peoples.
Over the last few years, several excavation campaigns have been carried out, led by the German Archaeological Institute, with teams made up of Portuguese, Belgians, Dutch, Spanish and Germans.
Tholos do Barro:
O Tholos do Barro is a collective tomb from the 3rd millennium BC, discovered in early 1909 by the eminent French archaeologist Paul Bovier-Lapierre. The first archaeological excavations carried out at the site took place in 1909, under the patronage of the Portuguese Ethnological Museum and the direction of Félix Alves Pereira, and with the collaboration of Paul Bovier-Lapierre and Eugénio Jalhay, then resident at the Colégio do Barro. The work carried out at the time identified a collective tomb of the type tholos, It was formed by a circular chamber, about 6 metres in diameter, with a false dome roof, accessed by a corridor, approximately 4 metres long, which at the time was still enclosed by the original slab. The entrance to the corridor, orientated to the south, protruded from a tumulus of land that originally covered the tholos, with a diameter of around 13 metres. It should be noted that the Tholos do Barro is the largest and best preserved false-dome tomb in the country.
