This activity proposal brings together two components in one day: walk, often by the river, starting in Escaroupim, passing through Valada do Ribatejo and Porto de Muge, and a boat trip on the River Tagus, with its mouchões, off the village of Palhota.

Escaroupim

About 7 kilometres from Salvaterra de Magos is the village of EscaroupimThis is an excellent option for a weekend, or just a Saturday or Sunday, to enjoy the calm and tranquillity if you want to get away from Lisbon, which is about 70 kilometres from the city on the N 118.

Escaroupim is a typical fishing village, formed in the mid-30s. Alves Redol called these families "river nomads" who, during the winter months, travelled from Vieira de Leiria to the River Tagus for the winter fishing campaigns, returning in the summer to their homeland to fish in the sea. Some of these fishermen stayed on the banks of the Tagus, forming small fishing villages along the river.

From an ornithological point of view, this place stands out for its heron colony, located in a mouchão on the Tagus.

Valada do Ribatejo

Valada is one of the eight parishes in the municipality of Cartaxo and one of the oldest. According to historians, the Romans were the first farmers in the Valada countryside, but it was during Arab rule that the first documents appeared referring to its rich, upland soil.

Valada's main wealth is agriculture, with its fields growing tomatoes, sunflowers, maize, wheat, melons and vines. From ancient times until a few years ago, shad fishing also played an important role in the economy of the inhabitants of this parish.

The parish's centrepiece is the River Tagus, with its beautiful surroundings, river beach, picnic area and campsite. It is a meeting place par excellence for visitors to the parish.

As a heritage site, Valada is proud of its church, which dates back to 1211, during the reign of Dom Afonso II. Having lost some of its beauty after the 1962 restoration, its patron saint is Nossa Senhora da Espectação do Ó.

Port of Muge

In Porto de Muge there is the Rainha Dona Amélia Bridge, a remarkable engineering feat, inaugurated on 14 January 1904 by His Majesty King Carlos I. This bridge, built for the railway, was decommissioned and is now adapted for road traffic.

Village of Palhota

Palhota is a typical fishing village, built with wooden houses on stilts, whose origins are lost in time. Alves Redol, a great Portuguese writer who wrote a lot about the Tagus and its people, once lived in this village.
