Event Description

At this event we'll get to know the Roman Theatre and take the time to take a pleasant stroll through some of the viewpoints and streets of Alfama.

Ruins of the Roman Theatre in Lisbon:

It was the first Roman theatre to be discovered in Portugal, a few years after the 1755 earthquake. In the ruins of the tragedy that destroyed Lisbon, there were other ruins. There is a long story to be told, but to this day it remains little known to the general public. That's why this museum was inaugurated in 2001, although it has operated somewhat intermittently - archaeological research and excavations forced it to do so. September 2015 now marks the beginning of a new life at number 3 Rua de São Mamede, in Alfama.

The ruins of the roman theatre are located on the southern slope of the Castle of São Jorge, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior, formerly in the extinct parish of Sé, in Lisbon.

The theatre was built in the 1st century, during the time of the Roman emperor Augustus. It was rebuilt in the time of Emperor Nero, and during the reign of Constantine it was partially dismantled. Abandoned in the 4th century, it remained buried until 1798, when the ruins were discovered after the 1755 earthquake.

The subject of several archaeological campaigns since 1967, part of the benches, the orchestra, the stage and the stage mouth and a large number of decorative elements were recovered. It was under the supervision of architect Francisco Xavier Fabri that the first excavations began in order to discover the state of the ruins.
