The Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre (CRLI) was created in 1987 with the aim of providing a suitable captive environment for wolves that cannot live in the wild. The CRLI occupies 17 hectares of land in a wooded and secluded valley. This area is characterised by good vegetation cover and heterogeneous topography, providing resident wolves with good shelter and refuge conditions. There are currently eleven enclosures in the Centre, covering a total area of 4.49 hectares. The wolves can be observed in unique conditions from the observation towers, situated at strategic points with a wide view of the different enclosures. At the same time as the CRLI provides the best care for the wolves, it offers studies, especially in the area of social behaviour, which, together with the research carried out in nature by the Lobo Group, serve as the basis for a publicity campaign that seeks to inform the public about the true nature of the wolf.

In Portugal, the disappearance of the wolf, particularly along the coast, became evident from 1940 onwards. With the drastic reduction in the area occupied in the 1970s, the species' situation worsened. The wolf population is not continuously distributed throughout its entire range; on the contrary, it is fragmented, with many areas where wolves are disappearing or have been exterminated. The wolf is a large mammal and is currently the largest wild canid. It is characterised by a yellowish brown coat on the trunk. The muzzle, reddish with intermediate shades between cinnamon and cinnamon yellow, has a lighter region, in shades of dirty white, which runs obliquely from the throat to the outer angle of the eye. The back is marked by a black stripe that runs from the neck to the tail. It has contributed to the city's atmosphere of peace and tolerance to this day.
