Event Description

This walking tour starts at the Óbidos Tourist Office, taking in some of the most emblematic streets of this walled town, considered one of the 7 wonders of Portugal. We'll then leave the town in the direction of the Arnoia river dam, but not before finding the ancient remains of the ancient Roman city of Eburobrittium. The route follows the banks of the river in a green and densely wooded area. At the end there's an ascent towards Casais da Navalha and again an incursion into the forest area, which will take us past a section of the old Aqueduct and back into Óbidos. Another event not to be missed!

 The Roman city of Eburobrittium

The town is mentioned by the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, in the first century, in his work "Naturalis Historia". In 1994, work to build the IC1 and IP6 roads in the parish of Gaeiras in Óbidos, near the Senhor Jesus da Pedra Sanctuary, uncovered archaeological remains from the period of the Roman invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. The following year, in 1995, a Roman Forum was even discovered. The size of the residential areas is still unknown.

The city was probably built under Caesar Augustus at the end of the 1st century BC and survived until the second half of the 5th century. Some of the spaces were later reoccupied, as can be seen by the existence of two medieval buildings.

The Arnóia River Dam

The Arnoia or Arnóia river rises in the Serra de Todo o Mundo mountain range, and after receiving the waters of the Real river it flows into the Óbidos lagoon. It runs for around 30 kilometres through A-dos-Francos, A-dos-Negros and Óbidos. The River Arnóia has been subject to the construction of a dam for agricultural purposes and its irrigation plan - the Óbidos dam.
