Event Description

In this event, we're going to discover the interior of the Convent of Our Lady of the Incarnation on a guided tour. As well as learning about the history of this space, we'll also visit its magnificent cloister. We'll also take the rest of the afternoon for a stroll around Santana Hill, where we'll see the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, Campo Mártires da Pátria, Ascensor do Lavra, Jardim do Torel, Igreja de São José and Igreja de São Domingos. Another event not to be missed!

Convent of Our Lady of the Incarnation:

Its origins date back to the 17th century, during the reign of Philip II of Portugal, following a testamentary disposition by Infanta Maria, daughter of King Manuel, to create a convent for nuns of the Order of St Benedict of Avis, which came to belong to the military rather than monastic order, under the invocation of Our Lady of the Incarnation. Subject to intervention campaigns after a fire in 1734 and the earthquake of 1755, the original Filipino complex underwent major changes. With the extinction of the religious orders (1834), the convent was not alienated, but it did undergo many functional re-adaptations of its space, having been transformed into the Recolhimento da Encarnação, which, from 1945, became part of the Recolhimentos da Capital. The church, which we won't be visiting, is the convent area where the interventions made during the reigns of King João V and King José are most visible. Entering from the right-hand side, its main portal, with a straight arch flanked by pilasters and columns, is surmounted by the coat of arms of Infanta D. Maria. It is currently run by the Sisterhood of the Handmaids of the Blessed Sacrament. Highlights of the interior include: the blue and white tiles from the first half of the 18th century, characteristic of the Lisbon Grand Masters Cycle; the ornate silver altarpiece, attributed to João Frederico Ludwig; the paintings and gilded woodwork in the chancel; and the paintings in the convent, attributed to Bento Coelho da Silveira and André Gonçalves and his disciples. This baroque building is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
