Event Description

This walk takes in the Tapada da Ajuda and part of the Monsanto Forest Park, through two of the most important green areas in Lisbon. Another event not to be missed!

Tapada da Ajuda

Its origins date back to 1645 as the Tapada Real de Alcântara, when King João IV ordered it to be so. After the earthquake of 1755, when the kings moved their residence to the heights of Ajuda, it was renamed Tapada da Ajuda.

Once a hunting park and the royal family's backyard, it is now one of Lisbon's most beautiful and leafy botanical parks. It has several green spaces and infrastructures open to the public, including a botanical reserve internationally recognised for its unique forest of zambujeiros. This space, currently managed by the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, is punctuated by some of the best examples of civil architecture from the second half of the 19th century, namely the Exhibition Pavilion and the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory.

The Tapada da Ajuda (intramural complex) is classified as a Property of Public Interest.

The Exhibition Centre

Part of the Tapada da Ajuda complex, which is classified as a Property of Public Interest, this building was built for the 3rd Agricultural Exhibition, inaugurated on 4 May 1884, according to a project by the architect Luís Caetano Pedro de Ávila, inspired by the vanished Trocadero Palace in Paris. The first landmark of iron and glass architecture, it consists of three pavilions with hemispherical domes, linked by two curved galleries. Restored for its centenary in 1984, the Exhibition Pavilion was restored to the city's heritage and is now a venue for social and cultural events.
