At this event we will walk In the Serra dos Gaiteiros, with excellent panoramic views over the Sado Estuary, we'll walk along paths and trails on the crest of the mountain and on the way back we'll pass several mills in the Serra do Louro and the Chibanes fort. We'll also have the opportunity to visit some of Palmela's main monuments, especially its castle. Another event not to be missed!

Serra dos Gaiteiros:

Considered to be of Relevant Geological Value within the scope of the Geological Characterisation of Arrábida, this mountain range developed over very thick conglomerates with a similar facies to the Arrábida Conglomerates, which correspond to a system of alluvial fans bordering the northern flank of the Serra da Arrábida, linked to the inversion of relief between the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic, being the only area in the country where it is possible to learn about the evolution of the eastern edge of the Lusitanian Basin, especially during the upper Jurassic.

Its size is a little larger than other hills in Setúbal, but it is not divided by headlands. It is 3 kilometres long and forms a single relief line. It is part of the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park, an area of great natural and landscape value.

Castro de Chibanes:

The fortified site of Chibanes is located in a culminating area of the Serra do Louro, with an extensive visual domain that reaches the Tagus estuary system to the north and the Sado river to the south.

The walled area during Pre- and Protohistory is estimated at around 1 ha. The earliest occupation dates back to the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, between 5000 and 3700 years before the present.

Abandoned at the end of the Campaniform Horizon (Early Bronze Age), the site was reoccupied, thanks to its good geostrategic conditions, in the 2nd Iron Age (3rd-2nd centuries BC) and in the Proto-Roman period, also known as Roman-Republican (2nd-1st centuries BC).

Chibanes is therefore a remarkable historical site, with great heritage potential revealed by the archaeological excavations of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography of the District of Setúbal (MAEDS).
