This walk takes place in the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, a place where you can appreciate the beauty of the whole region, with particular emphasis on the town of Carrasqueira, with its famous Palafíta harbour and pier, a photogenic setting and a postcard of the habits and customs of the people who live from fishing. The harbour is a precarious and labyrinthine network of walkways, built with wooden stilts, buried in the mud of the marsh that enters the river. We'll also get to know Comporta, our point of departure and arrival. Another event not to be missed!

Comporta

A Herdade da Comporta is one of the greenest, most harmonious and sustainable areas in Europe and where rice cultivation developed during the 20th century. There are around 1,100 hectares of rice paddies that paint the landscape green and from which around 7,000,000kg of grain are produced every year.

All the rice is produced according to integrated production standards - environmentally friendly production. This is a product that features prominently in the local gastronomy and makes a very positive contribution to the livelihood of a large part of the local population.

Although the constant wet green of this crop dominates a large part of the landscape, horticultural plantations (sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, among others) and organic farming have also been gaining in importance in the agricultural department of the company. Herdade da Comporta.

The forest, full of maritime pines, junipers and oaks that fill 7,100 hectares of land, adds other colours to the place. There are more than 5,000,000 trees planted and thousands of kilometres of pure oxygen.

Carrasqueira

The Carrasqueira Palafítico Pier is one of the most visited sites in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. This masterpiece of popular architecture, erected in the 1950s and 1960s, is unique in Europe and is built on irregular, apparently fragile wooden piles that serve as a wharf for the fishing boats that dock there. A tourist attraction, the pier still fulfils the mission for which it was built: to allow fishermen access to the boats, even at low tide. It is part of the Sado Estuary nature reserve and preserves an impressive network of pilings stretching hundreds of metres across the muddy banks of the River Sado. Along the various quays there are small wooden houses that serve as storage rooms."
