This walk will introduce you to Barreiro, highlighting the entire riverside area, as well as its traditional windmills, without forgetting the urban art, green spaces and memories of a very rich past. This is definitely an event not to be missed!

City Recreation Park

A central square and riverside path, starting at the Alemão caldera with free recreation and leisure areas. It runs along the River Coina and includes an area where the water level is artificially controlled - Caldeira do Alemão. Panoramic views of the river, Seixal and Serra da Arrábida.

Barreiro - Seixal railway bridge

It linked the Seixal and Barreiro stations. This section was inaugurated on 29 July 1923 and closed in 1969. Traffic was suspended after the railway bridge over the mouth of the River Coina was damaged by a ship collision. An extensive and beautiful beach located next to a small fishing village where the good restaurants stand out. The departure of the small boats that go out daily to fish is a moment not to be missed. This beach is the scene of the famous Festa do Mar (Sea Festival), with the traditional vacada on the beach, outside the Blue Flag beach boundary, which takes place on the first weekend of August each year, and is a very popular and traditional activity in the region. Equally popular is the Procession by Sea of Our Lady of Monserrate, from Porto Dinheiro beach to Peniche, towards the festival in honour of Our Lady of Good Voyage, which also takes place at the beginning of August each year.

There are three windmills. The largest or Giant, the centre or West and the last, the East.

Jim's Mill and Alfredo da Silva Riverside Walk

The mill was built by the British James Hartley, known as Jim. It functioned until the end of the 19th century, and in 1926 it was converted into a dwelling. In 1960 it became a Municipal Heritage Site.

Railway neighbourhood

The construction of housing by the Portuguese Railways was part of the company's “social” policy to attract and retain staff, offering conditions of family and employment stability and helping to discourage labour disputes.
