Event details

Event Description

This activity proposal has two parts: first we'll start with a guided tour of Algar do Pena, and then we'll go on a pleasant walk in the area of the Alviela springs, following paths that are so characteristic of the Serra de Aires e Candeeiros Natural Park and with the beauty of the Olhos de Água River Beach as the starting and finishing point of a 12-kilometre walk. You can also visit the Alviela Ciência Viva Centre and walk through the Ribeira dos Amiais river canyon. Another great event not to be missed!

Algar do Pena

Discovered in 1985 by Mr Joaquim Pena (hence the name of the grotto), following the dismantling of a limestone bench to produce paving stone, Algar do Pena is a very interesting cavity from a heritage point of view, forming part of the largest underground room known in Portugal (125,000 m3 in volume). From the top of the nearly 40 metre drop, a magnificent underground landscape opens up to the gaze of the visitor, whose aesthetic appearance takes on an unusual dimension through an enormous profusion of speleothems.

Given its biophysical characteristics and geographical location, it was chosen as the site for the 1st Underground Interpretation Centre in Portugal. After three years of studies, it was inaugurated on 5 June 1997. Accessible to the public (it has a technical support building, lift, open-air auditorium and a speleodrome), it represents a unique experience of descending into the depths, combining scientific importance with educational and tourist aspects of great interest.
