Event Description

The aim of this walk is to get to know the Serra da Aguieira, as well as its Fort and the Portela Grande Fort, with excellent panoramic views of the surrounding area, such as the Tagus and the Mouchões de Alhandra, da Póvoa and do Lombo do Tejo. We'll also pass the Monte Serves Dolmen.

Aguieira Fort:

This fort had a garrison of 150 soldiers and was not equipped with fire hydrants, a rare situation in the Line forts.

It belonged to the Second Line of Torres Vedras, closing the left flank of Vialonga's defensive position, which was linked to the beginning of the line, by the river Tagus, at Forte da Casa (no. 38). It is located at the top of the Aguieira mountain range, which overlooks the Bucelas gorge. Not equipped with any pieces, it was intended for barbed rifle fire to cover the forts of Portela Pequeno (no. 42) and Portela Grande (no. 41), and to hit the front of the mountain, where the roads from São Tiago dos Velhos and Alverca to Casal da Portela follow.
