Event Description
This walk starts in Costa da Caparica, on Av. 1 de Maio, near the roundabout behind the restaurant "O BARBAS".
The route passes through the middle of the vegetable gardens, up the hill at the end of the village, where we enter the beautiful Mata dos Medos trail, which will take us to the gardens, the viewpoint and the Capuchos Convent. At the end of our walk we'll also visit the ruins of the Alpena Fort.
The Capuchin Convent:
The Capuchos Convent, one of Almada's most beautiful and romantic monuments, is located on the Costa da Caparica. The complex was built in 1558 by Lourenço Pires de Távora, 4th Lord of the House and Morgado da Caparica, and is modestly built but very elegant.
Severely shaken by the destructive force of the earthquake of 1 November 1755, the convent was almost completely destroyed, with only the front remaining. Even so, it is possible to remember its primitive appearance.
The Capuchos Convent has been a favoured venue for important cultural events, most notably the Capuchos International Music Festival.
Alpena Fort:
The Alpena Fort was a system of armouries attached to the 5th Battery of the RAC and belonged to the General War Material Depot (DGMG) based in Beirolas. Unlike Raposeira, it had a permanent garrison 24/24 hours a day, made up of soldiers from the Trafaria barracks, 2 Corporals and 12 Soldiers, due to the fact that it was the closest military unit.
