In this event we'll get to know the Roman Ruins of Troia through a guided tour. We'll also take the opportunity to go for a lovely walk along the Sado estuary, crossing the Troia Peninsula and returning to the sea. For those who want to, and weather permitting, there's always the possibility of a swim in the sea!

Roman ruins of Troy:

The Roman Ruins of Troia are home to the largest known fish salting complex in the Roman world. Also here is the Palaeochristian Basilica of Troia, considered to be one of the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the best preserved. The fish salting complex was built in the first half of the 1st century and developed into a settlement that was occupied until the 6th century. The archaeological sites open to visitors are the two large salting workshops, the thermal baths, the mausoleum, the mausoleum's necropolis and the residential area of Rua da Princesa.

The tour route, installed in 2010, has seven observation points and signs indicating the alternative routes. The Palaeochristian basilica is very rich in Roman paintings that line its walls. Dating back to the late 4th and early 5th centuries, the paintings include geometric patterns - such as octagons, circles, lozenges - marbling and some figurative motifs such as birds, roses or the pitcher, which is very common throughout the Palaeochristian theme.

Hiking

We'll take a first walk between the Landing Pier and the Roman ruins. This walk will above all allow us to enjoy the panoramic views from the bank of the Sado Estuary. Then, on the way back, we'll walk along the beach, next to the sea, for the most part along the sand, until we reach the boarding pier to catch the boat to the city of Setúbal.
