Event Description
Palmela Castle:
With Islamic occupation between the 8th and 12th centuries, Palmela Castle was conquered by King Afonso Henriques in 1147 and definitively recovered by King Sancho I. The definitive seat of the Order of Santiago from 1443 until its extinction in 1834, the fortification has been a National Monument since 1910. The castle's geographical position allows it to strategically dominate part of the Sadino estuary, a slope of the Arrábida mountain range and the surrounding plains that separate it from the Tagus. In other times, this situation was of the utmost importance due to the links and communication possibilities established with the surrounding castles on the Tagus and Sado rivers.
Within the castle walls you'll find: the Pousada Histórica de Palmela, located in the former convent of the Order of St James; the Church of St James; the ruins of the Church of St Mary, whose sacristy houses the Office of Studies on the Order of St James; the Tourist Office; shops selling handicrafts and regional products and a Café-Espanada.
St Paul's Convent:
Located on a farm in Arrábida, the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Consolação de Frades da Ordem de São Paulo de Alferrara (better known as the Convent of São Paulo) has origins dating back to 1383 and is surrounded by a unique landscape.
Serra dos Gaiteiros
Considered to be of Relevant Geological Value, within the scope of the Geological Characterisation of Arrábida mentioned above, it developed over very thick conglomerates with a similar facies to the Arrábida Conglomerates, which correspond to a system of alluvial fans bordering the northern flank of the Serra da Arrábida, linked to the inversion of relief between the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic, being the only area in the country where it is possible to learn about the evolution of the eastern edge of the Lusitanian Basin, especially during the upper Jurassic.
