Event Description
This proposed walk starts at the Pia do Urso sensory eco-park, and we'll follow trails of rare beauty, along the old paths of millers and pilgrims from Fátima and Santiago, between various characteristic hills in the Serra de São Mamede area, as well as their typical houses. Another event not to be missed!
Walking among the mills of the Serra de São Mamede - discovering Pia do Urso
This walk will cover around 14 kilometres, on a circular route of rare beauty, between ancient trails travelled by millers and pilgrims to Fátima and Santiago de Compostela. The entire route is marked by several mills, some of which are still in operation, such as the “Moinho do Cassaca”, the “Moinhos do Zé Cuco”, the “Moinho do Manuel Moleiro”, the “Moinho do Mocho” and the “Moinho do Castelinho”, among others. Part of the same route taken by 16th century pilgrims when they attended the Bodo festivities or the Holy Spirit Festivities, which took place in the mountains on the first Sunday in May, is also used along the route.
Starting at the Pia do Urso car park, we'll climb past the mills, old guardians of the landscape from other times, to the “Moinho do Quatro”, then continue through farmland and woods to Moita do Martinho, where we'll see a group of typical houses from the São Mamede area with their traditional rounded chimneys, then climb from mill to mill, along the old millers' trails, through ancient Mediterranean oak woodland, still in its virgin state, and fields of lapiaz, to the set of mills at Alto dos Crespos. At the end, we'll discover Pia da Ursa, and visit the Pia do Urso sensory eco-park, the first in our country designed for people with visual impairments.
