Event Description
This proposed walk starts in Reguengo do Fetal and takes in the Senhora do Fetal Sanctuary, the Malhadouro Valley and the famous Pia da Ovelha. From there we'll reach Buraco Roto, a necropolis cave of unrivalled beauty that will surprise all walkers. Another event not to be missed!
Walking in the Roto Hole
This route starts at Praça da Fonte Square in the parish of Reguengo do Fetal. We'll start by going up to the Senhora do Fetal Sanctuary, where the famous Snail Procession takes place, attracting thousands of pilgrims and visitors to the parish. We'll then continue through cultivated fields towards the Reguengo Valley, where there is a large patch of centuries-old Cerquinho Oak trees, Then we'll climb up a steep footpath through oaks, laurels and cork oaks towards the top of the mountain to the Chão Falcão Wind Farm, where you can see an immense panorama over the Batalha area. We'll then pass by the old Malhadouro quarry and then descend steeply towards the Malhadouro Valley.
When you arrive in the Malhadouro Valley, one of the places where climbing is possible. This area is one of the most used in Portugal by lovers of this mountain sport. During this journey you can also see the Chimney - a natural phenomenon resulting from the erosion of water and wind - and the Pia da Ovelha (a large natural pit), which owes its name to the sinkhole built under a stalactite and which drips abundantly in the rainy season. It was used in the past to water cattle.
We'll climb up the hillside to Pia da Ovelha and from there to the top of Reguengo, on a trail with immense spectacularity, and then pass along a cobbled path often used by pilgrims heading to the Sanctuary of Fátima, until we reach Buraco Roto - a necropolis cave of unrivalled beauty and scenery. In the rainiest months, it discharges large quantities of water, creating an impressive cascade. It is located in the middle of a wooded area where oak, laurel and cork trees stand out.
