Event Description
The aim of this walk is to explore the recently inaugurated Tagus River Trail, a total length of around 5 kilometres in the Alverca do Ribatejo area, where you can enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the Tagus riverfront. On a circular route, we'll also walk along part of the Fátima do Tejo Way, and take the opportunity to get to know a greener part of Alverca, such as its beautiful José Álvaro Vidal Garden, the Mother Church and the Pillory. Another event not to be missed!
Tagus River Linear Park
Our route takes in part of the Tagus River Linear Park, in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, which has a total of 22 kilometres of riverfront. Between Forte da Casa and Alverca we'll get to know the new walkways, viewpoints, rest areas and all the improvements that now allow everyone to enjoy these kilometres more by the river. We'd like to highlight the Tejo Trail, the Moinho Trail and the Salgados Trail.
Alverca Pillory
Alverca's pillory is an outstanding example of the Manueline style. Dating from 1530, it symbolises the municipal authority, which punished minor crimes with flogging or exposure to public shame.
This didn't stop it from suffering the greatest vandalism in the 19th century, and it was eventually pulled down in 1891. It wasn't until 24 April 1988 that it was put back in its place, showing the effects of its poor conservation. On the pillory you can see the royal coat of arms of the donor, King Manuel I, and, on the opposite side, the armillary sphere; the castle of Santarém, with three towers, where the donation was made; and 4 heads, representing the nymphs of the Tagus - the Tágides.
