Event Description

This proposed walk starts at the Moita pier, and from there it takes in the beautiful bay of Moita, with its magnificent surroundings and the water mirror, with fishing and pleasure boats adding a unique colour to this setting. Our goal will be to arrive at Praia do Gaio Rosário, where we can watch a fantastic sunset provided by the beauty of the place. With a route almost always along the seafront, this will certainly be another event not to be missed!

Moita Quay:

The Moita Quay has played an important role for centuries. The movement of goods and passengers by river to and from Lisbon has given this anchorage great economic and social importance. For centuries, the Quay was the heart of the town of Moita. All life gravitated around it. It was the great gateway to the outside world.

Travellers, carts and ox carts loaded with goods arrived here to take the ferry to the city of Lisbon. Due to all this daily movement of passengers and goods, which increased from the 17th century onwards, the quay became a real workplace, where a large number of men worked as porters, living off the needs of the shipments that each tide allowed them to make.

Sítio das Marinhas:

Between Sarilhos Pequenos and Alhos Vedros, there are several places where the remains of old salt pans can still be seen, next to the marshes and other naturalised areas. We would highlight, due to their accessibility, the area of the old Quinta do Esteiro Furado, to be seen from the municipal road between Sarilhos and Rosário (this is private property) and the old salt pans next to the road between Gaio and Moita, on arrival in this town.

Among the various species of water birds that can be seen here are flamingos, which are visible almost all year round at low tide (most easily at Caldeira da Moita), especially from late summer until winter, when the Tagus harbours several thousand individuals scattered throughout the estuary.
