Event Description
Other days and times are available for this programme.
After registering, you will be contacted to book your dolphin watching experience.
This event consists of a pleasant boat trip along the estuary of the River Sado and the coast of the Serra da Arrábida and Tróia to observe the Sado Dolphins, the Bottlenose Dolphins, the friendly community resident at the mouth of the river, of around three dozen animals, one of only three colonies resident in estuaries in the whole of Europe. This is a guided tour where you can learn a lot about the river and the dolphins. With the help of the weather conditions there will be the possibility of swimming in the summer.
One drink (beer, wine, sangria, water or soft drink) is also included.
The Dolphins
The dolphin is a cetacean, i.e. a marine mammal (not a fish). It lives its entire life in the water and does not need to come ashore at any time. The bottlenose dolphin, bottlenose dolphin or bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is perhaps the most famous and well-known species of dolphin in the world, due to its distribution along coastal and oceanic waters in all the seas of the planet with excretion from the polar seas. The name Bottlenose dolphin was given to them by fishermen because the dolphins sometimes gnaw on their nets in an attempt to steal the fish trapped in their meshes. If they gnaw, they're bottlenose dolphins, and that's how they got their name. Corvineiros because one of their favourite foods is corvina.
The bottlenose dolphin's diet consists of a wide variety of fish (mullet, horse mackerel, sardines, anchovies, eels, etc.) cephalopods (cuttlefish and squid) and some crustaceans. Despite being a generalist and opportunist, with the ability to adapt its diet to the availability of prey, it can, depending on the geographical area, have a set of preferred prey.
Females reach sexual maturity earlier than males. They give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of around a year and with a minimum interval of two to three years between births. Although there are records of births in all seasons, there are peaks in the warmer months. Breastfeeding is the main source of food during the first year of life and can last up to 18 months or more, with the first year considered fundamental for the cubs' survival as it is a year of learning. Maternal investment in this species is high, with separation usually occurring with the birth of another chick.
