Event details

Event Description

This proposed walk starts next to the Colares Regional Winery. The route takes place in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park area, on the hillside between the village of Penedo and Monserrate, passing by the Mosqueiros Lagoon, using some forest tracks and accesses that provide great scenic views, with the sea and Praia das Maças in the background, surrounding some Quintas, especially near Gigarós. A walk not to be missed by all nature lovers.

Colares Pillory

The Manueline pillory of Colares was probably erected in 1516 when King Manuel I granted it a charter. It rests on three hexagonal steps and its base is also hexagonal and is formed from three platforms of increasingly smaller radius. The column, divided into two drums separated in the middle by a triple cord, has a torso shaft decorated with rosettes. The upper section consists of a small “pine cone” capital, profusely decorated according to the grammar of the time, which is surmounted by a pinnacle with helical grooves. It is devoid of any weapons and the smithies of the ordeals have now disappeared. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Lakes of Montserrat

On the downhill section of our route, we'll walk around the paths that surround the beautiful Monserrate lakes, which serve as the irrigation system for Monserrate Park. There's a real water trail here, which runs through the interior of the property once you've crossed the road.
