The Way
The Nazaré Way stretches from the Atlantic coast to the mountainous interior. It connects two important Marian shrines: the historic Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazareth, located on a promontory or finisterre above the sea and whose origins date back to ancient times, and the Sanctuary of Fatima, which was built in the 20th century in Cova da Iria on the site of the 1917 apparitions. The landscape is diverse. After the maritime-influenced scenery that marks the start of the route, you follow a vast area of pine forest and floodplain and then enter the mountainous area of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. The whole route is characterised by nature, in a setting where rural villages and small urban settlements emerge. Churches, chapels, hermitages and small local shrines are landmarks all along the Way.
26th October (Saturday) - STAGE 1 - From Sítio da Nazaré to Pedreiras (Porto de Mós)
Walking from Nazaré to Pedreiras
Between Sítio da Nazaré, with the sea as a backdrop, and the village of Pedreiras in the municipality of Porto de Mós, with the Serra dos Candeeiros on the horizon, there will be approximately 24 kilometres, with short stops in cosy places, enjoying the landscape and getting to know an amazing cultural and natural heritage. During this day, the route crosses the territory of rural parishes in the municipalities of Nazaré, Alcobaça and Porto de Mós. The fauna and flora are varied, with the emphasis on seabirds in the area of Atlantic influence and the varied fruits from the productive floodplains, fed by rivers and streams. The areas of pine forest alternate with agricultural fields of fertile alluvial land in Valado dos Frades and Maiorga, where villages emerge from the prosperous rural parishes.
Level of difficulty of the route: 3.5 (Scale of 1 to 5)
Route length: 24 kilometres

27th October (Sunday) - STAGE 2 - From Pedreiras to Fátima
Walking from Pedreiras to Fátima
This stage between the Church of Pedreiras and the Sanctuary of Fátima takes place in a surprising setting of extreme beauty. The biggest challenge is the climb up and over the Serra dos Candeeiros, where nature imposes itself with its steep slopes and characteristic rock formations. Here, the degree of difficulty is high, but we can enjoy the scenery. In this mountainous territory that leads to the Serra de Aire, you'll find scattered settlements in small cosy villages, surrounded by farmland dotted with olive, oak and holm oak trees. The relief is characteristic of the Estremadura Limestone Massif, where nature comes to life. We'll be in the heart of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, which was created in 1979 with the particularity of valuing the inseparable relationship between nature and man.
