Monsanto Forest Park

Located in the mountain range that gave it its name, known in ancient times as a sacred place, Monsanto Forest Park is the city's largest green area. The dense woodland that characterises it today is quite recent, however, since until 1938, when it was first planted, the area was practically inhospitable, with vegetation limited to that found in Tapada da Ajuda and Mata de S. Domingos de Benfica. The idea of creating a peripheral forest in this part of the city dates back to 1868 and then reappeared with the hygienist ideas of the Mac Bride brothers, who in 1925, from a still utopian perspective, imagined a large 1800ha forest for Lisbon, torn up by avenues stretching from Campo Grande to Monsanto. It would be necessary to wait for Duarte Pacheco to act as Minister of Public Works (1932-36) before the Monsanto Park was realised. Based on dense afforestation, with pine, eucalyptus and oak trees forming areas of woodland with a single species, the project was defined as a wild forest, thus opposing previous conceptions of an English or French park, where nature is more controlled. This idea was also in line with Keil do Amaral's modern perspective on the relationship between the landscape and the park's integrated structures. These include the various viewpoints, the Alvito Tennis Centre and, above all, the Montes-Claros restaurant-viewpoint, which has a visual relationship both with the lower level of the pergola around the large lake and with the Tagus estuary, which its dominant position allows us to see. With an area of around 900 hectares, Monsanto Forest Park is the largest green area in the city of Lisbon. The park offers Lisboners and tourists magnificent views over the capital, an encounter with a profusion of animal and plant life and numerous leisure and sporting opportunities. The vegetation is diverse, despite the clear predominance of stone pine, and the fauna includes rabbits, squirrels, small carnivorous mammals and horseshoe bats, an endangered species, as well as birds such as robins, woodpeckers, round-winged eagles, owls and owls. There are several urban parks in Monsanto: Parque Recreativo do Alto da Serafina, Parque do Alto do Duque, Parque do Alto de Monsanto, Parque Ecológico, Mata de S. Domingos de Benfica, Parque de Campismo, Parque Infantil do Alvito, which together provide facilities for tennis, swimming, horse riding, children's games, car modelling, a maintenance circuit, bird watching, children's games and restaurants.
