Event Description
In this event we'll get to know the town of Alcáçovas, its surrounding area, especially the Vale de Tanques dam and Cabeço da Cruz. We'll walk along various rural paths and return to the town, which is the capital of Chocalho, to learn more about its rich heritage. Another event not to be missed!
Charms of Alcáçovas
We start our walk in the town's Public Garden and move on to the Cabeço da Cruz area, with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Here, we can appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds this picturesque village. But the walk is not limited to the village, as we move along the old paths, we pass by the Vale de Tanques reservoir and its picnic park and, returning to the village, we reach monuments that tell the story of the world, such as the Paço dos Henriques and the Jardim das Conchas, revealing secrets that have stood the test of time. Each stone and ancient façade shows the glorious past of this town, considered the Capital of Chocalho. We'll also pass through the heart of the village, where you'll be amazed by the architecture and rich details of the Mother Church, a witness to the community's past and devotion.
Paço dos Henriques
Classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1993 and the subject of conservation and restoration work in 2016, the architectural complex of Paço dos Henriques, located in the heart of the Alentejo town of Alcáçovas, is one of the cultural heritage references of the municipality of Viana do Alentejo.
The architectural complex of the Paço dos Henriques, which evolved architecturally until the 16th century, is one of the landmarks and stages of Portuguese history. It is associated with the signing of documents that linked the development of events and the rise of blood ties that shaped Portugal's position of primacy in the world: the Treaty of Alcáçovas - Toledo and the Treaty of the Terçarias of Moura, both on 4 September 1479, the signing of King João II's will with the Infanta Beatriz of Castile (parents of Manuel I of Portugal), and the marriage contracts of King João II with the Infanta Beatriz of Castile (parents of Manuel I of Portugal). João II and the marriage contracts between Infante Fernando, Duke of Viseu and Infanta Beatriz of Portugal (parents of Manuel I of Portugal), and João II of Castile with Infanta Isabel of Portugal (parents of the queen known as Isabel “The Catholic”).
The highlight is the garden and chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, where shells, whelks and 17th century ceramics give the space the charm of maritime serenity.
