Event details

Event Description

This walk will allow us to get to know some of Arrábida's most typical villages better, such as Aldeia de S. Pedro, Aldeia da Portela and Aldeia da Piedade, as well as passing through Aldeia de Irmãos and Aldeia de Oleiros. Our route also includes the Alambre Picnic Park, green areas and various farms that are so characteristic of this area. Another event not to be missed!

Arrábida Villages

The villages of Piedade, São Pedro and Portela are generally known as Coina-a-Velha, which is one of the oldest places in Azeitão, as evidenced by its name and the ruins of its castle.

Village of Piedade

A he name Aldeia da Piedade may be related to the name of a chapel that once stood there. É This village is quite beautiful. Its houses form a beautiful ensemble that fits in extremely well with the surrounding landscape. As a drawing room, there's the characteristic largo do poço (well square), the village's living room and the centre of its daily life. You can see buildings from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, round shutters, rustic canteens, etc.

St Peter's Village

It takes its name from the chapel nearby. Some round stonework portals show the antiquity of the village, perhaps dating back to the 16th century, or perhaps even earlier than the chapel. This village has around 10 to 12 families.

Portela Village

It's a very small village, made up of around fifteen families. No-one knows who built the first house on that site, but it takes its name from the fact that it is on the top of a hill and that the road to Parral and El Carmem passes through this gateway. The same extract from Dom Pedro I's letter, transcribed when talking about the village of Oleiros, also mentions the portelas. I don't know if the village was already populated at the time, in 1366. “summit of the portelas mountain range”, of which the aforementioned document speaks.

Village of Oleiros

In the village of Oleiros, the 16th-century chapel of St Mark and the 18th-century fountain are noteworthy.

Village of Brothers

In Aldeia de Irmão, the chapel of São Sebastião is noteworthy, as are several farms in the area. A he name “Aldeia dos Irmãos” (and not Aldeia de Irmãos, as it is today) is due, according to tradition, to the fact that the construction of the beautiful chapel of São Sebastião was the result of action taken by some brothers who lived there.
