EVENT DESCRIPTION: "Walking in the Serra da Boa Viagem, Salinas, Arrozais, Montemor-o-Velho, Paul da Arzila and Paul do Taipal"

In this activity proposal from Caminhando, we'll go on a magnificent hike in the Serra da Boa Viagem, passing Murtinheira beach, walkways and various viewpoints. Our route will also take us past Buarcos, the Salinas with a suggested visit and a short walk, and we'll finish with a sunset at Praia da Claridade. On Sunday we'll go for a walk through the Mondego rice fields in Ereira, visit Montemor-o-Velho Castle and stop off at Paul do Taipal and finish with a short stroll through the Paul da Arzila Nature Reserve. There will also be time to discover Figueira da Foz, where we will be staying.

Hiking in the Serra da Boa Viagem

On this walk we'll follow the best trails in the Serra da Boa Viagem, on a 14-kilometre route that offers breathtaking views over the coastline as far as the Ria de Aveiro, passing some viewpoints such as Miradouro da Bandeira. Highlights include the Santa Marinha Fountain, Santo Amaro Chapel, the walkways at Murtinheira Beach and the Quiaios Waterfall (which may or may not have water depending on the time of year). A route where you can enjoy breathtaking views and a unique contact with nature.

Walk and Visit to the Salt Museum Centre

The Salt Pans Route is an extraordinary living museum for lovers of nature and the arts related to salt culture. Despite the loss of importance that salt extraction suffered in the 1970s, the Municipality of Figueira da Foz acquired and activated the Corredor da Cobra saltworks, where part of the route takes place, with the aim of preserving the historical and cultural value of this legacy. Beginning at the Salt Museum Centre, a structure created in 2007 that aims to perpetuate the centuries-old relationship between man and the salt pans, and the salt warehouse, a typical pine wood building used to make salt in Figueira da Foz, this route initially goes through the interior of the Corredor da Cobra salt pan, in a unique experience of permanent contact with this heritage associated with salt.

9.30am - Walk "In the rice fields of Ereira and Baixo Mondego"

This walk will take place in Baixo Mondego, among the extensive rice paddies around Ereira. The route is intensely marked by the presence of fields
These are elements that have moulded the landscape and the social context of the entire region since the mid-19th century, both because of the transformation of the traditional economic base, which until then had been based on farming (maize cultivation and cattle rearing) and because of their incorporation into the local cultural identity, expressed in gastronomy, folklore and ethnography. Our tour includes a stop at Monte de Ferrestelo. Here, the Castro de Santa Olaia, a jewel of the archaeological heritage, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1954, where remains of settlements from the Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman and Medieval periods have been identified, deserves a close visit. Also on this hill is the Chapel of Santa Olaia with its privileged view
for the rice fields of the Mondego valley.

Walk in the Paul da Arzila Nature Reserve

This wetland comprises two distinct areas: an alluvial plain, where there is an extensive reed bed and some occupation   and a protection zone stretching along the slopes flanking the valley, which is essentially forested and also agricultural, on the land surrounding the urban areas. Paúl de Arzila is classified as a Nature Reserve due to its ornithological importance, as it is an autumn passage area for birds It is also a feeding and resting area for various species, a shelter for strictly paludicolous nesting species and a wintering site for Palaearctic species. The symbol of this Reserve is a reddish egret (Ardea purpúrea), given its importance as a nesting species in this protected area.
