Event Description
This walk from Caminhando will take you along a route of great beauty, between various trails and roads, always in a rural setting, with wide-ranging views, from the Serra do Socorro to Montejunto, as well as the Arrábida mountain range on the south bank. From our route we can still see Moinho do Céu in the distance, as well as Sobral de Monte Agraço, the Monte Montijo wind farm and the hills and valleys so characteristic of this western area. Another event not to be missed!
New Fort
The windmill there, although one of the largest in the western region, dates back to the early 20th century, but the extraordinary panorama it displays is timeless, making it a magnificent observation point that overlooks the entire Santo Quintino terrain, the valley that runs from Sobral to Arruda dos Vinhos, the Tagus (near Carregado, Vila Franca and Alhandra) and other 1st Line forts such as Caneira, Paço, Moinho Céu and Carvalha.
Alqueidão Fort
Fort with an irregular polygon plan. Built at an altitude of 442 metres, it is the largest fort in the Lines of Torres Vedras and was the most important position in the 1st defensive line, having been designed for a garrison of 1590 soldiers. The Command Post of the Lines of Torres Vedras was located here due to its strategic location. Inside there was the Governor's House, four armouries and three small defence redoubts, as well as a water well. This is where the 1st Independent Brigade of Portuguese Infantry was based, under the command of Brigadier General Dennis Pack (with 2769 men), as well as two ordinance artillery companies, the Artillery Companies of Vila do Sobral.
