Event Description
This hike starts next to the Blue Lagoon, follows paths and trails of great beauty, taking hikers as far as the Rio da Mula Dam, along the “famous” Bridges Trail in the direction of the Capuchos Convent, and then to the breathtaking landscape of the Mosqueiros Lagoon. At the end, on a descending route, we'll enjoy some more fantastic trails, returning to our starting point.
Blue Lagoon:
The existence of the Blue Lagoon is due to the alteration of the granites of the Sintra massif which, as a result of the action of various erosive agents, give rise to sands and clays that will coat and waterproof the bottom of the lagoon, preventing the water that accumulates there from draining away, the role of the clays being fundamental here thanks to the small size of their particles.
The erosion caused by the vegetation, which grows between the cracks in the granite, can be easily visualised, as can the roots that run through and break up the rock.
There is also a healthy pinkish granite. This colour is due to the abundant presence of a mineral called orthosite (alkali feldspar) and, among the rest of the mineralogical composition, quartz, various feldspars and black mica (biotite) stand out.
