Walking the Fraguinha and Birch Route
This is an idyllic route for mountain lovers. Passing through the Retiro da Fraguinha, very close to the birch forest, it climbs to the top of the Serra da Arada, one of the mountains that make up the impressive Gralheira massif, which at this point is, in geographical terms, the natural border between Beira-Alta and the coast. The descent to Aldeia do Candal is long and winding, along an old granite path. In the villages you pass through, you'll see a lot of canastros, still necessary today for rural life. The journey to Lagoa da Fraguinha, just outside the village of Póvoa de Leiras, follows an extensive levada that has fed these villages for centuries. in terraces, which are increasingly rare in these latitudes.
The villages of Candal and Póvoa das Leiras, separated by the Paivô stream, seem to emerge from the contours of the mountains, such is the naturalness of their location and agricultural land. If the scenery from a distance is overwhelming, on the route between the two villages an old, dense oak grove promises to embrace anyone who crosses it. The water runs free and wild and the flora seems to be its own master.
Lunch will be in the form of a picnic, which is the responsibility of each participant

The route starts in Manhouce, where we can see the Roman bridge, the gorge of the Manhouce stream, the windmill, the levada and further along the Vessa stream we come across the Poço da Silha. As we climb, the oak trees disappear and we begin to see patches of pine trees and granite blocks, creating truly inspiring panoramas. At the top of these slopes we are in the area of the Iberian wolf and large birds of prey. The route passes through several high-altitude villages in the Gralheira Massif, with architecture based on granite and surrounding terraces, such as Gestosinho, Bondança, Salgueiro, Malfeitoso and Lageal.
