On this walk we'll pass through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, specifically in the Gâmbia area. The route crosses a flat area of maritime pine forest, salt marshes and old salt pans, located next to the River Sado, where you can see plenty of birdlife, especially waders. The area is called Pontal dos Musgos and its vegetation is dominated by pine and cork oak trees. Another event not to be missed!

Gambia Fishing Harbour and Palafitico Pier

At the Gâmbia fishing harbour there is a fishing community of around 30 fishermen, and you can visit the fish farms and the Pontal de Musgos area, which has a sandy area where you can fish, sunbathe or go cycling.

In the Pontal de Musgos area, in the 1960s and 1970s there were warehouses where the oysters were sorted, but in recent years they have been abandoned.

The Gambia Estate

Herdade de Gâmbia is a family-run business that has been engaged in agro-forestry and livestock farming since it was acquired by Dr Francisco de Paula Borba in August 1917. Over all these years, it has developed various agricultural and livestock activities, but the forestry sector has been the one that has deserved the most attention, given the characteristics of its setting from the point of view of location, soil and climate. The estate is located around 9 kilometres from Setúbal and runs along the right bank of the Marateca stream, covering an area of around 600 hectares, all of which is part of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. Today, Herdade de Gâmbia, as a productive unit, is stabilised in a system that includes cork oak forests, pine forests, vineyards and two livestock units of cattle and sheep
