Event Description
This proposed walk takes place in the area of the Machada National Forest and the Coina River Marsh, a magnificent place to enjoy as a group and get to know an important place to preserve, so close to Lisbon.
Machada National Forest
It is the main forested area in the municipality of Barreiro, with an area of 370 ha, and is considered the "lung of the city". It has various facilities that enhance its use by residents, such as the Environmental Education Centre, the archaeological site, two picnic parks and various fountains. It is a favoured spot for sports, recreation and leisure activities, often used for walking, jogging or doing the maintenance circuit. The suggested walking and mountain biking routes, duly signposted, allow you to explore the forest at your own pace.
The dominant tree species are maritime pine, stone pine and cork oak. We can also find Mediterranean species such as hornbeam, strawberry tree, myrtle and heather. The different vegetation formations and topography make the forest a habitat for various animal species, including birds such as the blue tit, the bee-eater, the round-winged eagle and the blue magpie.
This is where you'll find the Mata da Machada and Sapal do Coina Environmental Education Centre.
