In this event we'll be hiking one of the best trails in the entire centre of Portugal, the Vila Rei Waterfalls Trail, with spectacular panoramic views, paradisiacal waterfalls in hidden valleys, where only a walk can show you all these beauties. Then we'll head to Praia do Penedo Furado and walk along the Penedo Furado Walkways to discover the waterfalls of the Ribeira de Codes! Another event not to be missed!

Waterfalls Trail

This is a short circular walking route, starting and finishing in Vila de Rei. This trail runs along the Ribeira do Lavadouro, Ribeira do Vale Feito and Ribeiro da Vila. Nature has generously endowed this route with its whims, allowing several waterfalls to form in its rocky valleys, with magnificent nooks and landscapes. The fact that it has different characteristics gives this route a very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, surrounded by a wild landscape in which you can combine the charm of the waterfalls with the existence of numerous birds and a specific flora.

Penedo Furado River Beach and Walkways

The Penedo Furado River Beach is one of the most popular spots for the many tourists who visit the Vila de Rei municipality every year. Its crystal-clear water, which slowly makes its way through the natural passage in the rock, the unique characteristics of the rocky massif and the fantastic waterfalls make this place an authentic paradise.

In order to provide better access between the Penedo Furado River Beach and the waterfall area, the Vila de Rei Municipality has decided to go ahead with the creation of the Penedo Furado Walkways. These cover a distance of 532 linear metres and include a bridge at the end of the route and platforms for rest areas, with benches and viewpoints.

The surrounding area is also a place of rare beauty, with the existence, in the highest area, of a gigantic rock with a huge tapered opening, which gives the beach its name. This is where the Penedo Furado viewpoint was created, from where you can admire the magnificent landscape of mountains and hills covered in pine forests, the Codes stream, the Castelo do Bode reservoir and some of the houses in the neighbouring villages.

The “Bicha Pintada”, located below the Penedo Furado viewpoint, is a fossil that, according to some scholars, is believed to be more than 480 million years old. This type of structure is interpreted as having grooves produced by the feeding and travelling activity of trilobites on a sandy bottom.

Near this spot is the Fragas do Rabadão viewpoint, where there is a Way of the Cross and a small sanctuary, from where you can enjoy the landscape as far as the Castelo de Bode reservoir and where a trail starts that joins up with the trail from the previous viewpoint, linking to the “Bicha Pintada” (Painted Bike)”
