On this walk, we'll follow various rural paths and trails along the hillside area of Bucelas, the capital of Arinto, with the highlight being the Baloiço das Portelas with a superb view over the Freixial valley where the walk will begin. We'll pass through Ribas de Cima and the Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park, and we'll also have the chance to pass by the old fortifications of the 2nd Defence Line of Torres Vedras and take a look at the ruins of the Albergaria Grandela Sanatorium. Another event not to be missed!

The Arinto variety

Arinto is present in most Portuguese wine-growing regions, as evidenced by the wide range of synonyms applied to this white grape variety. The Arinto variety produces vibrant wines with high acidity, a strong mineral profile, enormous refreshment and good ageing potential. The firm acidity is in fact Arinto's main calling card, giving it back its reputation as an improving grape variety in many Portuguese regions. Whilst it is in Bucelas, very close to Lisbon, that the variety historically reaches its apogee, its assistance is fundamental in the Alentejo and Ribatejo, precisely because of the contribution of acidity that is so necessary... and so difficult to obtain.

Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park

The Cabeço de Montachique Municipal Park is geared towards sporting activities and contact with nature. It is equipped with a multi-sports court, four tennis courts and a tennis ball wall. It also has a table tennis room, changing rooms, a space for traditional games, a maintenance circuit, orienteering and a picnic area.

Montachique Redoubt NO. 55

Located inside the Montachique Municipal Park, on top of a rocky hill at an altitude of 273 metres, it is part of the group of field fortifications that defended the 6th District, in the Second Defensive Line. Strategically, it defended the Perneiro valley, the São Gião road and, above all, the Torres Vedras-Loures road, which gave access to the Montachique gorge. This military construction was linked to other fortifications such as the Mosqueiro Redoubt, the Moinho Redoubt and the Achada Redoubts. This redoubt had a garrison of 250 soldiers and was equipped with two 12 calibre fire hydrants

Sanatorium Grandella Hostel

Anyone coming from Loures on the EN 374 can't help but notice, from a short distance away, the ruins that rise on the hillside. Locals have adopted it as a castle, some call it a palace, but the imposing structure is more like a fortress. It has stood there for almost a hundred years and contains a good number of stories and legends. We're in the presence of the planned Sanatorium Grandella, the same as the famous Chiado warehouses.
