EVENT: Hiking in the Sierra de Gredos, Garganta dos Infernos, Cáceres, Plasencia and Salamanca

DATE OF REALISATION: 19 to 22 June 2025

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 30 APRIL 2025

EVENT DESCRIPTION: “Walking in the Sierra de Gredos, Garganta dos Infernos, Cáceres, Plasencia and Salamanca”

On this extended weekend, come and discover the marvellous mountainous landscapes of the central Iberian system. A contrast between green valleys and arid peaks. On our route we'll enjoy two walks: one in Cáceres and the other in Plasencia, as well as a short hike to visit a series of waterfalls in preparation for what awaits us in the following days. The highlights of our trip will be in the Jerte Valley, where a river of glacial water flows through and gives the valley its name, and the Gredos Cirque, with its set of peaks, especially Pico Almanzor, the highest point in the Sierra de Gredos at 2592 metres. We'll also have time to visit some of the river beaches and take a dip to revitalise our bodies and minds. We'll also have a morning dedicated to the historic city of Salamanca, with its Cathedral, University and Plaza Mayor. Come with us and you won't regret it!

These are some of the most important places we'll be visiting during this event:

  • Hike in the Sierra de Gredos Natural Park
  • Hike in the Garganta dos Infernos Nature Reserve

  • Tour of Plasencia (historic centre)

Walking: “Walking in Hell's Throat”

Points of interest: Jerte River, Mirador del Chorrero de la Virgen, Fountains, Monte Reboldo, Natural Pools, among many others

This walk offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike. One of the most fascinating aspects of the “Ruta de los Pilones” is the origin of its name. The word “pilones” refers to the gigantic pools that dot the landscape along the route. These pools have been formed over the centuries by the force of water erosion on the granite rock, creating unique and picturesque formations. The crystal-clear waters of these pools invite visitors to take a refreshing dip, making them a popular spot during the summer months. Along the route we will come across several wooden bridges that allow us to cross the river and explore different sections. These bridges not only serve a practical purpose, but also add to the charm and rustic beauty of the region.

Level of difficulty of the route: 3.5 (Scale of 1 to 5)

Route length: 14 kilometres

Estimated duration: 6h30

  • Stop for “baths” and other points of interest according to the time available

Next to the Circo de Gredos, where the lagoon is formed, there is a refuge that serves as a base for other more demanding hikes, such as the ascent to Pico Almanzor.
