The route from Alegrete

It starts next to a pleasant riverside leisure area in Alegrete and has various themes. It runs through part of one of the most humanised natural parks in Portugal, whose landscape has been strongly influenced by human activities. Along the way, you'll see maritime pine and eucalyptus trees, dehesas, olive groves, vineyards and vegetable gardens. The cistus are also present, and in the distance you can see one of the highest points of the mountain range, where the Pico de São Mamede stands out. One of the coolest sections follows the banks of the Arronches stream, which flows in the shade of alder, willow, blood and cherry trees. The points of interest remind us of long-abandoned agricultural practices, such as threshing floors, apiary walls, dams and levadas.

Lunch will be in the form of a picnic, which is the responsibility of each participant

The Castle of Alegrete

Just over ten kilometres from Portalegre, the castle of Alegrete is one of the most important fortresses in the Alto Alentejo region. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a fundamental fortification in the regional defence system. Its origins remain obscure. The traditional reading of its history points to an antiquity that predates the kingdom of Portugal, since it was conquered from the Muslims by King Afonso Henriques. However, the first reliable news of its existence dates back to the 13th century, particularly during the reign of King Afonso III. In 1267, following the Convention of Badajoz, the town was definitively integrated into Portuguese territory, which reflects its importance in the regional context.

Walking around Portalegre

This route takes us through the surroundings of Portalegre, along its highest points to the north-east, sometimes with panoramic views of the city, from where we can identify some of its most emblematic buildings, such as the Castle and the Cathedral, sometimes through old walled holm oaks and narrow pavements, between countless properties and small towns. It's a very green route, with countless clusters of black oak, chestnut, cork oak and pine trees, which harbour other riches of flora and fauna. The abundance of mosses and lichens covering walls and tree trunks indicates the freshness of the place, but also the quality of the air.
At the eastern end of the route, you'll get views of the Serra de São Mamede. Near the end, we head down the Estrada do Boletim Meteorológico and pass the building of the Portalegre Meteorological Station. Just below it is an old military structure called Atalaião. We'll also pass the Fonte dos Amores before the end.
